Chidambaram Temple, a must-indulge travel experience
The historic temple complex of Chidambaram is a must visit for tourists and the best activity to indulge in. The complex spreads across 40 acres of land, situated right in the centre of the city. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s Nataraj avatar and also shrines of other deities such as Lord Ganesh, Kartikeya (Murugan), Shivakami Amman, and Lord Vishnu in his Govindaraja Perumal form.
The foundation of this gem of a structure was erected by craftsmen called Perumthakkan under the reign of Chola King Parantaka. The monarch himself laid the golden tiled roof of the temple. After that, the king was bestowed with the title “Thillaiyambalathhukku porkoorai veiyntha thevan”, which roughly translated to “the one who constructed the golden roof.”
