About the Festival
Mysore Dasara or Dusherra is an auspicious 10 days festival with 10th day being called as Vijayadashmi. Vijayadashmi denotes victory of truth over evil and was the day when the Hindu Goddess Durga over the Asura (demon) Mahishasura. The slaying of Mahishasura by the goddess Durga gave mysore its name. This festival is one of the most important festivals in Mysore and is celebrated with grandeur, zeal, pride and faith in their almighty.The main highlight during the 10 day festival is the Mysore palace which is illuminated with more than 100,000 lights during the whole period of festival. The palace also holds various competitions of art, dance and culture during the festival becoming the centre hold of all the attraction.
KulluDusherra unlike Mysore Dusherra commences on the 10th day known as Vijayadashmi and continues for next 7 days. According to legend GodRaghunath after his return from a pilgrimage to Maharishi Jamdagni went to his hermitage at Malana. On his head he carried a basket filled with eighteen images of different gods. Crossing through, he came upon a fierce storm. Struggling to stay on his feet, Maharishi Jamdagni’s basket was thrown from his head, scattering the images to many distant places. Hill people, finding these images saw them take shape or form as Gods, and began to worship them. Legend has it that deity worship began in the Kullu Valley. More than 4-5 lac people visits the fair from all across the Globe. It is celebrated in the Dhalpurmaidan in the Kullu valley
