Amritsar-The Land of Golden Temple
The famous Golden Temple or the Sri Harmandir Sahib or the Darbar Sahib is a Gurudwara for Sikhs in Amritsar, Punjab. The Gurudwara is plated with gold and hence the name Golden Temple. It is one of the most pious places for people from the Sikh religion. The Gurudwara was constructed on the banks of a man-made pool that was finished by the 4th guru, Guru Ram Das. The fifth guru, Guru Arjan had the Adi Granth placed inside the Darbar Sahib in 1604. Under the Mughal Empire the Gurudwara Sahib was destroyed many times to be re-built again and again. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who had the marble, copper and gold plating work done on the Gurudwara in 1830. The place is visited by not only people belonging to the Sikh culture; people from all walks of life are welcome inside the Harmandir Sahib. The Gurudwara is visited by more than a lakh people every day and most of them sit down for the free langar – a vegetarian meal cooked by a Sikh-run community kitchen. People visiting here are not discriminated over their religion and everyone is free to join the sacred langar. Other than the Golden Temple, the other places of interest here include the Jallianwala Bagh that is a memorial now – a place where hundreds were killed by the British Raj that is famously known as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Amritsar is also a favourite place for food lovers where the Amritsari Kulcha and the big glasses of Lassi are relished by people from all over the world. One of the oldest places to shop in Amritsar is the Hall Bazaar. Surrounding the Golden Temple, you can find the traditional jhootis and clothing and dress materials to buy from here. The Guru Bazaar is equally famous for jewellery items. If you are looking out to buy the traditional Phulkari material clothes then you need to head straight to the Katra Jaimal Singh Bazaar. Another place of reverence is the Wagah Border, 32 kms from Amritsar. It is famous for the ceremony that takes place ever afternoon where the border security force of both India and Pakistan participate.
