Agra- The Magnificent City Of Taj

Lying to the south of Delhi, Agra is located in the Braj region in state of Uttar Pradesh in North India. It is situated at a distance of about 208 kms from the capital city of the country. The city is a foremost tourist destination in India mainly because of the presence of the three UNESCO World Heritage sites here. Agra was the capital city under various rulers before it finally served as the centre of administration under the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1648. The city is also known as ‘City of Taj’ and is world famous for being the home to the iconic Taj Mahal, a monument that symbolizes love. Built in white marble, it is a mausoleum on the banks of River Yamuna constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The sight is mesmerizing, more so during the full moon night. The interiors are even more spectacular enclosing the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan with the walls decorated with semi-precious stones. The Agra Fort built in red sandstone was renovated by Emperor Akbar in 1565 and housed the nobles for more than a century. The Moti Masjid, the Diwan-e-Aam, the Diwan-e-Khas, Shish Mahal, Khas Mahal, Jahangir’s Palace are all part of this Fort structure. Reminiscent of Mughal architecture, the fort has a forbidding exterior facade with four gates, namely the Khizri Gate, Delhi Gate, Lahore Gate and Amar Singh Gate, and has a moat that surrounds the entire Fort from the outside. Another not-to-miss monument here is the Jahangir Mahal that was built by Akbar for his wife – the monument is resplendent with extraordinary carvings and work of artistry. The Hauz-i-Jahangiri is a notable feature of the place – it is a big bowl-shaped structure made from a rock and was used for keeping rose water. The Mehtab Bagh, the Anguri Bagh, Humayun’s Mosque, the Itimad-Ud- Daulah, Kinari Bazaar and the pethas are some of the other must-see and must-relish things to do while in Agra. The local markets in Agra offer awesomely delicious Mughlai cuisine for tourists especially the chaat corners at Sadar Bazaar.
