Jaipur- The City of Forts and Palaces
Jaipur, also called the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan. The city was founded by Raja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer in 1727. It is a famous tourist spot and is part of the famed north India Golden Triangle circuit that starts from Delhi, then moves towards Agra and finally to Jaipur. Most tourists who are booked for Rajasthan Tours start their journey from Jaipur and then carry onto other prominent places in the state. Jaipur has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Amer Fort and the Jantar Mantar. The Amer Fort is located at about 11 kms from the city centre. It overlooks the Maota Lake and is built on a high hill. It twins with the Jaigarh Fort where both the forts were used by royal Rajput families as their place of residence. The Jantar Mantar, on the other hand is of astronomical significance featuring the world’s largest sundial made of stone and enabling the observation of different astronomical positions with the naked eye. The City Palace built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the eighteenth century is now the perfect place for devotees of historical arts and artefacts as it houses a museum while a part of it is still the official residence of the royal family of Jaipur. The Hawa Mahal made with red and pink sandstones resembles a honeycomb or beehive and is a unique feature in the landscape of Jaipur. The other places of attraction in the city include the Rambagh Palace; the Rajmahal Palace; and the Jal Mahal built in the centre of the Man Sagar Lake. Visitors to this city must not miss out on shopping and tasting the spicy tangy delicacies. The Johari Bazaar is famous for jewellery, precious stones and clothes. The Tripolia Bazaar is famous for the different varieties of bangles and the Chandpole Bazaar is an artists’ paradise where one gets to buy handicrafts, shoes, sculptures, carpets, turbans etc. made by local artisans. What to not miss here by foodies is the dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ghevar, feeni, kachori, gajak and lal maans for non-vegetarians.
