Pushkar- The City of Temples

Located at a distance of 150 kms from Jaipur, Pushkar lies in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. The city is a revered pilgrimage site for followers of Hindu and Sikh religion. Located on the banks of Pushkar Lake, pilgrims are able to bathe in the sacred waters of the lake at different ghats on its bank – there are about 53 ghats and about 400 temples in the area. Consumption of egg and non-vegetarian food within the city limits is prohibited. The annual Camel Festival also called the Pushkar Mela is a world-famous event here. During the Kartik Purnima, as per Hindu calendar, the fair is held for a period of seven days with more than 2 lakh people attending it every year. Since the city is on the outskirts of the Great Indian Thar Desert, visitors are able to plan a day trip to the Sam Sand Dunes, about 8 kms from the city. Night camping is also a great option to enjoy the colourful rustic atmosphere of the Thar. The other common activity that most tourists take part in is the camel safari. For travellers who are not comfortable with the camel ride and looking for adventure, a jeep ride across the rough terrain of the nearby areas is recommended. The famous Brahma Temple is one of the sacred places to visit here. This is the only temple in the country that is dedicated to Lord Brahma and hence of great importance to religious people. The city also has the Gurudwaras dedicated to Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. For food lovers, this is just the place to undertake a food tour at the local market. Adventure enthusiasts can partake in different activities like quad biking, rocket ejector, Zip lining and Zorbing. The Pushkar International Balloon Festival is another event that has become quite popular in recent times. The event was started in 2010 and ever since has attracted thousands of people as it provides the perfect ride over the desert and hilly terrain of Pushkar. The other places of interest are the Varaha Temple, Savitri Mandir and the Meera Bai Temple at Merta.
