The Jaisalmer Fort or the “Sonar Qila” is the most famous attraction of the destination. It is one of the perfect monuments that speak volumes about the glorious past of the city. Its commanding presence is the first thing that is noticed by visitors. It is built up of sandstone, and when the sun rays fall on the fort, it appears to shimmer with golden hues, hence the name “Sonar Qila” or the Golden Fort. The fort is 250 feet tall and is fortified with 20 feet high crenelated sandstone. Its 99 bastions stand guard to the city that faced a lot of attacks by enemies in the historical past. The fort is an excellent example of Islamic and Rajput architectural styles. To reach this fort, the visitors can pass through Akshay Pole, Ganesha Pole, Hawa Pol, and Suraj Pol. There is a Palace Museum within the premises of the Fort where an impressive range of miniature paintings, old weapons, armour, and many more artefacts are on display.
Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli, Salim Ji Ki Haveli and Patwaon Ki Haveli that were residences of erstwhile landlords and residents are worth visiting and admiring. These striking havelis are truly spectacular and are known for their intricate carving and detailed work. These havelis are an excellent example of Islamic architecture.
Bada Bagh or the big garden is located halfway between Lodhurva and Jaisalmer. It is known for its magnificently built chhatris or royal cenotaphs of Jaisalmer Maharajas. Here, one can also spot the impressive cenotaph of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh Ji. The intricate carvings on the ceilings and majestic equestrian statues of the Maharajas have made the cenotaphs look nothing less than spectacular.
Famous Sam Desert is known for its vast expanse of sand dunes. Though barren, this area is considered as truly spectacular. You can also enjoy Camel Safari and enjoy the beauty and sheer stretch of the dunes. Many visitors love to visit this place in the evenings and later enjoy camping under the stars.
